Wash and peel the potatoes. Cut them into 1/8-1/4" thick slices
Place the potato slices into the baking dish, and sprinkle ground pepper and olive oil. Mix with a hand
Add oil to the frying pan, and sautee the ham at medium heat until semi crispy
Cut the ham into 1/2" pieces. Pour the seasoned potato slices onto the cutting board
Place potato slices at the bottom of the baking dish. Top it with sliced mozzarella sheet
Sprinkle ham pieces on top of the cheese. Repeat the process until you run out of potatoes. Sprinkle grated cheese on top
Whisk the egg with some milk. Pour the egg liquid into the baking dish
Set the oven to 350F. Bake for 45-55mins. (I covered the baking dish with an aluminium foil for about 20 mins). Around 40 mins, poke the potato with a fork, if there is no resistance, the potatoes are cooked
If the cheese surface is not golden enough, broil at low to medium setting for 1-3 mins
Take the dish out of oven, and let it rest for 5-7 mins
Cut and serve

Notes
This is my first try. I didn't have much experience with the recipe. I only had three layers of potato slices. I think this is too thin.
I covered the baking dish with an aluminum foil for half of the baking time. It turned out the potato was sort of wet.
You can replace ham with bacon or even salmon, or canned tuna. However, you would need to season the salmon or tuna with some salt.
You could include some minced onion when sauteeing the ham.
You could also sprinkle minced parsley on top of one of the layers.
