I don’t know if there is an authentic roast beef sandwich recipe. I think you could do whatever way you like as long as it makes sense to you.  For a lot of recipes/dishes, I do need to do some research before I prepare them. However, for this recipe, I don’t recall I learned it from any recipe. It just came to me when I saw all the ingredients. I used to make hamburgers using brioche or challah bread. Both are soft. After a while, I stopped making sandwich or hamburgers. At a local French style restaurant, they offer lunch sandwiches, which is light and use good quality bread. The grocery store I visit happens to offer similar quality bread. That really convinced me to make sandwiches, which are very versatile. You could choose different cheese, different veggies, different sauce, different meat, and cook the meat different way. It’s a simple recipe with gourmet ingredients, a great weekend lunch option

Roast Beef Sandwich 牛肉三明治

Equipment

  • 6“ Frying pan with a lid
  • 12" Frying pan
  • baking tray

Ingredients
  

  • 8 oz roast beef
  • 2 steak bread
  • half medium onion
  • half red bell pepper
  • 2 pieces parmesan cheese (or provolone)
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • sprinkle salt
  • 1 tbsp balsamic vinegar
  • 3 tbsp wine (water)

Instructions
 

  • Slice the onion and pepper into 1/8" wide pieces
  • Turn on the oven, and set it to 350F
  • Add oil to the 6" pan, turn heat to high, add the sliced onion and pepper to the pan, and stir. Once the pan becomes hot, add the wine (water), and cover the pan with a lid. Turn heat to low to medium
  • Stir the veggies every 3 minutes. After about 15-18 minutes, both pepper and onion become tender. Add balsamic vinegar and salt, stir to mix. Let it cook for another 3-4 minutes. Set the pan aside.
  • After adding the balsamic vinegar, put the 12" pan onto the stove, add oil, and turn the heat to high. When the pan is hot, add the roast beef to the pan. When both sides of the beef turn slightly brown, remove the pan from the heat.
  • When both the veggie and beef are on the stove, cut the bread in half, put the cheese on half of the bread. Place the bread onto the baking tray. Toast for about 2-3 minutes. Use a hand to press the bread. If it is turning crunchy, take the tray out of the oven.
  • Assemble the sandwich

Notes

  • This is a very versatile recipe. You can choose the beef of different style. You can also caramelize the onion and pepper in a different way. The bread and cheese could be replaced with other varieties.
